This  document describes how to configure MVS, TCP/IP, and PSF to print on  TCP/IP-attached IPDS printers, including LAN printers attached using  the OnePrint server or client.
            The throughput of TCP/IP-attached printers can be limited by the following factors:
            
              - The configuration of your TCP/IP networks. 
Note  that the default maximum transmission unit (MTU) size, specified on the  GATEWAY statement in the TCP/IP profile on the MVS system, may result  in slower data transmission to the printer. IBM recommends an MTU size  of 2000.
            
              - A large amount of network traffic. 
- Communication-line speed, if data is transmitted over telephone lines.

              - Requirements for Using a TCP/IP-Attached IPDS Printer 
To print on TCP/IP-attached IPDS printers through PSF, you need the following software:
            
              - PSF/MVS Version 2 Release 2.0 with APAR OW15599. 
- MVS Scheduler APAR OW12236 to support two new PRINTDEV keywords: IPADDR and PORTNO. 
- TCP/IP Version 1 Release 3, or higher, installed and configured on MVS. 
Note: The TCP/IP address space name must be set to 'TCPIP', which is the default at installation.
            
              - Overview 
PSF  views TCP/IP-attached printers in the same way it views SNA  network-attached printers. PSF performs error recovery, handles  intervention required situations, and displays messages exactly as it  does for SNA-attached printers.
            TCP/IP  software provides universal communication services (interfaces) between  physical networks and applications. The communication services reside  at the network layer and are independent of the topology of the  underlying physical network.
            For example, in communications between an MVS host and a printer, the IP network performs like a single network. In fact, however, the network is physically like that shown below.

            Routing  of information is determined based on the IP address and is performed  by IP gateways. After the network is configured correctly, the MVS host  appears to be communicating directly with the TCP/IP-attached printer.
            
              - Connecting TCP/IP-Attached Printers 
To connect a TCP/IP printer so that you can print from PSF, do the following:

              - Defining the Communications Control Unit to MVS 
If  you have not already done so, define the communications control unit  for the MVS host, such as the 3172 or the 3745 control unit, to MVS.  Use either an MVS configuration program (MVSCP), or a hardware  configuration definition (HCD), depending on the version of your MVS  system:
            
              - · When using a version prior to MVS 4.1.0, use an MVSCP. 
- · When using a version of MVS 4.1.0 or later, use an HCD or MVSCP. 
              - Modifying the TCP/IP Profile in MVS 
The  TCP/IP profile contains system configuration statements used to  initialize the TCP/IP address space. This section contains information  about those configuration statements that have special considerations  when you are printing from PSF on TCP/IP-attached printers. If you  change any of the values in the TCP/IP profile, restart TCP/IP to pick  up the changes.

The  following statements in the MVS TCP/IP profile, have special  considerations when using PSF to print on a TCP/IP-attached printer:
            
              - DATABUFFERPOOLSIZE, which specifies the amount and size of data buffers 
- SMALLDATABUFFERPOOLSIZE, which specifies the amount of small data buffers 
- TINYDATABUFFERPOOLSIZE, which specifies the amount of tiny data buffers 
- KEEPALIVEOPTIONS, which specifies the interval between keep-alive transmissions 
- GATEWAY, which defines static routes, including the maximum packet size for each route 
- DATABUFFERPOOLSIZE Statement: The DATABUFFERPOOLSIZE statement defines the amount and size  of the data buffers. For printing on TCP/IP-attached printers, IBM  recommends that you specify at least
                
                    - 160 data buffers 
- 32 768 buffer size 
 
- SMALLDATABUFFERPOOLSIZE Statement: The SMALLDATABUFFERPOOLSIZE statement defines the amount of  small data buffers. For printing on TCP/IP-attached printers, IBM  recommends that you specify at least 256 small data buffers. 
- TINYDATABUFFERPOOLSIZE Statement: The TINYDATABUFFERPOOLSIZE statement defines the amount of  tiny data buffers. For printing on TCP/IP-attached printers, IBM  recommends that you specify at least 256 tiny data buffers. 
- KEEPALIVEOPTIONS Statement: PSF relies on TCP to detect when a connection with a  TCP/IP-attached printer ( OnePrint ) is no longer usable. TCP sends  keep-alive probes to the connection partner periodically when no data  had been exchanged between PSF and its connection partner. These  periodic probes, called keep-alive transmissions, enable TCP to  discover when a connection is no longer usable even if the connection  partner is abruptly powered off or is no longer accessible through the  network. 
The  frequency of keep-alive transmissions is controlled by the INTERVAL  parameter on the KEEPALIVEOPTIONS statement. The frequency applies to  all TCP applications that direct TCP to send keep-alive transmissions.  The default frequency is after approximately 2 hours of inactivity.
            For  printing on TCP/IP-attached printers, IBM recommends that you specify a  shorter interval than the default, such as 10 minutes for the interval  between keep-alive transmissions.
            Also, specify SENDGARBAGE TRUE if any target host requires that the keep-alive packet contain data. For example:

              - GATEWAY Statement:  The Packet_size parameter of the GATEWAY statement defines the maximum  transmission unit (MTU) for the MVS host. Note that the MTU size must  not exceed the maximum size that can be sent through the control unit;  otherwise, transmission problems will occur. 
- For printing on TCP/IP-attached printers, IBM recommends: MTU size of 2000 bytes 
- The MTU size for the MVS host should be the same as the MTU size of the printer. 
- Note: For values in the GATEWAY statement other than the packet size, specify the correct values for your installation.

              - Pinging the Printer 
To verify that the MVS system can establish a connection with the TCP/IP-attached printer, ping the printer from the MVS system.
            Issue the following command from a TSO session:
            TSO PING ip-address
            In JES2, enter the following command from the System Display and Search
            Facility (SDSF) menu 6:
            ping ip-address
            ip-address
            Specifies the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the OnePrint.
            Figure4 shows an example of a successful and unsuccessful ping.

            Ping is Not Successful: If the ping is not successful, and the printer is
            attached, verify the following:
            
              - The printer is powered on. 
- The MVS address is unique in the TCP/IP network. 
If the IP address of the MVS system is not unique, see your network
            administrator to resolve the IP-address problem.
            
              - The Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) size of the IP packet for the MVS system is equal to the MTU size of the printer. 
- To  change the MTU size for the MVS system, change the GATEWAY statement in  the MVS TCP/IP profile and restart TCP/IP to pick up the changes.
                
            - To change the MTU size for the printer, refer to your OnePrint manual 
 
If none of these problems exists, contact your TCP/IP network administrator about a possible network problem.
            Ping  is Successful: A successful ping usually indicates that the MVS system  can communicate with the printer; however, you might receive a  successful ping even though IP address of the TCP/IP-attached printer  is a duplicate of another IP address.
            If  PSF is unable to establish a network connection with the  TCP/IP-attached printer, or if PSF output for this printer prints  elsewhere, follow these steps to verify that the IP address of the  printer is unique:
            
              - Turn off the OnePrint. 
- Wait at least 5 minutes for TCP/IP to clear the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) tables. (  You may need to wait longer if your installation specified a longer  interval on the ARPAGE configuration statement in the TCP/IP profile.  Refer to IBM TCP/IP MVS Customization and Administration Guide for  information about the ARPAGE statement.) 
- Enter the ping command again from the MVS system to determine whether you receive a response. 
If  you receive a successful response to the ping command, indicating that  a duplicate IP address exists, contact your TCP/IP network  administrator to resolve the IP-address problem.
            
              - Defining the OnePrint to JES 
A  TCP-attached printer must be defined for deferred-printing mode with  JES. To define the printer to JES, see & Chapter 7, Using Deferred  Printing Mode; in Print Services Facility/MVS: System Programming Guide.
            
              - Defining the OnePrint to PSF 
Each TCP/IP-attached printer (as the OnePrint ) must be defined to PSF with a PRINTDEV
            statement in the PSF startup procedure. For TCP/IP-attached printers, the
            following keyword is required on the PRINTDEV statement:
            IPADDR='ip-address'
            ip-address
            Specifies  the Internet Protocol (IP) address for the printer or attachment in  dotted-decimal notation. Do not specify a host name in place of the  dotted-decimal address.
            Figure 5 shows a sample procedure, APSWPROT, shipped with this APAR, which
            you can modify to suit your installation. The PRINTDEV statement shows the required IPADDR keyword.
            The  APSWPROT procedure contains JCL parameters to produce a startup  procedure for either 240-pel and 300-pel printers, but the references  to 300-pel resolution are commented out. To create separate startup  procedures, make two copies of APSWPROT, then follow the commented  instructions in APSWPROT. Keep one unchanged copy as your 120/240-pel
            resolution  startup procedure. Delete or comment out all references to240-pel  resolution in the second copy, and make all references to 300-pel  resolution active. This changed copy is your 300-pel resolution startup  procedure.
            If  a printer can print both 240-pel and 300-pel jobs, create two separate  FSAs, one for 20-pel and 240-pel resolution jobs, and one for 300-pel  resolution jobs.
            Although doing so is not recommended, you can drive the printer with just one FSA, if one of the following conditions is met:
            
              - All  resources in the resource libraries are resolution independent, and all  jobs that use inline resources or user libraries contain resources that  are resolution independent. 
- All  jobs that request a resolution that is different from the  resolution-dependent resources in the PSF system and security libraries  contain the resources at the requested resolution as either inline  resources or in the user's library. 
The  240-pel resolution FSA uses 240-pel resources, ( Even if a PSF user  requests 120-pel resolution for an AFP print job being sent to printer,  SF requires 240-pel resources from the library. Do not store 120-pel  resources in the library. ) and the 300-pel resolution FSA uses 300-pel  resources.
            Both  FSAs are defined to drive the same printer; however, only one FSA can  be active at one time for a given printer. You should define separate  classes or destinations for each FSA. Your installation must route the  appropriate jobs to the appropriate class or destination. The two FSAs  can be defined in the same or in separate startup procedures.

              - Operating TCP/IP-Attached Printers as the OnePrint 
You operate a TCP/IP-attached printer, including OnePrint, with JES operator commands,
            just as if it were a channel-attached or SNA-attached printer.
            
              - Starting a TCP/IP-attached Printer 
To start a TCP/IP-attached printer, do the following:
            Start TCP/IP.
            Power on the printer.
            Power on or run the OnePrint.
            Start the printer FSA as described on Appendix A. Using Deferred-Printing Mode;
            
              - Stopping a TCP/IP-attached Printer 
You can stop a TCP/IP-attached printer ( OnePrint ) in several ways:
            
              - The preferred method is to first stop the PSF FSA for the printer from the MVS console by entering the following command: 
JES2:
            $Pprinter-name
            JES3:
            *VARY printer-name,OFF
            *CANCEL printer-name
            where printer-name specifies the name of the printer FSA.
            Then, you can turn off the OnePrint
            
            This  is not a recommended procedure, because PSF may not recognize that the  printer is powered off for a long time, depending on the value  specified for the keep-alive transmissions.
            To  end the PSF FSA for the printer, use the JES commands described in the  first bullet. If you are unable to purge or cancel the printer using  the JES commands, enter the following command:
            MODIFY FSSname, FORCE, printer-name
            Appendix A. Using Deferred-Printing Mode
            The  PSF FSA dynamically allocates a channel-attached printer or establishes  a session for an SNA-attached or TCP/IP-attached printer and manages  the printer until the FSA is stopped. The JES operator can control the  FSA-managed printer using JES operator commands.
            For detailed information please refer to Print Services Facility/MVS: System Programming Guide.
            Figure  6 shows sample JES2 statements for a channel-attached printer (PRT1),  an SNA-attached printer (PRT2), and a TCP/IP-attached printer (PRT3).  In the following samples, PRT1 is a 3835, PRT2 is a 3820, and PRT3 is  any supported TCP/IP-attached printer, as the OnePrint.
            Note:  These are samples only. For specific coding for JES parameters, refer  to the appropriate JES publication for the level of JES you are using.

The  above example is correct for JES2 1.3.6 and 2.1.0. For JES2 3.1.1 and  above, the FSSNAME parameter is gone, and the FSSNAME is in parentheses  after FSSDEF, as in FSSDEF(FSS1).
            Figure  7 shows sample JES3 statements for a host-connected, channel-attached,  non-SNA printer (JNAME=PRT1), for an SNA-attached printer (JNAME=PRT2),  and a TCP/IP-attached printer (JNAME=PRT3).

Note:  PSF also provides optional replacements for APSUX01 and APSUX02 that  create header and trailer pages containing fewer characters. A sample  header page created by the optional separator page exit is shown in  Figure33 on page 96 of the Print Services Facility/MVS: System  Programming Guide. This format should print faster than the default  separator pages on SNA-attached and TCP/IP-attached printers because it  contains less data to be transmitted to the printer.
            Figure  8 shows a sample startup procedure for FSS with a single printer FSA.  PRT3 is any supported TCP/IP-attached printer, including any printer  attached using the OnePrint.
            The  following are examples showing how startup procedures could be modified  and do not necessarily use the recommended values. Refer to  SYS1.PROCLIB for recommended values.
